Chapter 1

The Day Jason Disappeared

Janice Vaughan

Jason Jolkowski was your typical 19-year-old, with big dreams and a hopeful outlook for his future. Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, he lived with his parents and younger brother. Jason was a part-time college student studying broadcasting, a passion that fueled his aspiration to become a radio DJ. In fact, he was already lining up his first serious gig as a DJ, set to start within the next week. But to those closest to him, Jason wasn’t just a young man chasing his dreams. He was reserved, shy even, and known to keep a small circle of close friends. It was clear he preferred staying under the radar, focusing on his studies, and doing things by the book.

June 13th, 2001, began like any other day for Jason. Fazoli's, the restaurant where he worked, called him in at the last minute to cover a shift. Problem was, his car was stuck at the shop for repairs. So, Jason arranged for a ride with a coworker. To make it easier, they agreed to meet at Benson High School, a spot both of them were familiar with. The school was only eight blocks away—about a half-mile from Jason’s home. Before he left, Jason was spotted by his neighbor doing something thoughtful, something typical of him. He was pulling trash cans from the curb back to the house to help his younger brother. It was a small act, but it would be the last confirmed sighting of him.

Hours later, something was amiss. Jason's coworker arrived at Benson High as planned, but Jason wasn’t there. She waited as long as she could, even trying to call Fazoli's to check if he had gone straight to work. But soon it became clear… Jason had never made it to the meeting point. Security cameras at Benson High confirmed it. He simply didn’t show up. And from there, there’s no trace—none. No activity on his bank account, no use of his phone, and his car remained at the repair shop. To make matters stranger, Jason had less than sixty dollars on him that day. There wasn’t a single shred of evidence indicating where he might have gone after leaving his house.

This quiet, responsible young man vanished into thin air on an otherwise ordinary June morning.

Chapter 2

The Suspicions of Foul Play

Janice Vaughan

As the hours turned into days after Jason Jolkowski's disappearance, the gravity of the case began to weigh heavily on his family and the investigators involved. Jason wasn’t the type of person to just take off without a word, not to his parents or his younger brother. He was shy, sure, but deeply dependable. And and what’s more, his routine leading up to that morning lacked any hint of trouble—no arguments, no strange behavior, nothing. He even took time, right before leaving the house, to help with the trash cans. I mean, that’s Jason in a nutshell, right? Unassuming, responsible, always thinking about others.

Janice Vaughan

And that’s what makes this case, well, so unsettling. It defies logic. There’s no evidence Jason had plans to leave on his own. He left behind everything a young man his age depended on—his car at the repair shop, almost all of his money untouched in the bank, even his scheduled start at a new DJ job he’d been so excited about. None of it adds up. His family insists there were no enemies, no connection to risky situations, no drugs, no alcohol, nothing that could explain why Jason would vanish so suddenly.

Janice Vaughan

To complicate matters, Jason lived with a learning disability that affected his speech and made giving detailed instructions tough for him. While it didn’t define him—far from it—it could make him seem vulnerable to someone with bad intentions. That vulnerability raises questions, questions that lead many—including his loved ones—to suspect foul play. If Jason was met with danger that morning, who knew he’d be walking alone? How would somebody catch him off guard in what should’ve been a safe, ordinary routine?

Janice Vaughan

Even the police scratched their heads, calling it one of the most baffling cases they’d worked on. And here’s the thing—twenty-plus years later, that mystery still haunts Omaha. There are theories, sure, but no hard evidence, no confirmed leads. It’s almost as if Jason disappeared into thin air.

Chapter 3

A Legacy of Activism and Advocacy

Janice Vaughan

Jason Jolkowski may have disappeared without a trace, but his story didn’t end there—it inspired a movement. His parents, Jim and Kelly, channeled their grief into action, launching Project Jason in 2003. This nonprofit organization became a lifeline for families navigating the terrifying, uncertain world of missing loved ones. It isn’t just about providing emotional support, though the importance of that can’t be overstated, but also about bridging resources, raising awareness, and keeping cases like Jason's in the public eye. Through Project Jason, countless families have seen that they’re not alone in their search for answers.

Janice Vaughan

And a couple of years later, in 2005, came something truly groundbreaking: Jason's Law. Spearheaded by his parents, this legislation created a statewide database for missing persons in Nebraska, providing investigators and families with a desperately needed tool. It's one of those rare cases where advocacy leads to real, tangible change, and it’s no small feat. Jason may still be missing, but his name became a beacon of hope for other families walking the same painful road.

Janice Vaughan

Kelly Jolkowski, especially, has been the beating heart of this movement. Her relentless determination earned her national recognition, including the Volunteer for Victims award from Eric Holder, the U.S. Attorney General at the time, in 2010. It’s an acknowledgment that Kelly didn’t just fight for her son, but for every parent, sibling, or friend who’s ever been left searching for a loved one. Later, Nebraska’s Governor honored her humanitarian work—proof of the lasting impact her advocacy continues to have.

Janice Vaughan

And while it’s bittersweet—because no parent should have to channel grief into activism—Kelly’s work ensures that Jason’s disappearance won’t be forgotten. It reminds us that behind every missing person is a family fighting to ensure they’re more than just a name on a list. And for that, Jason’s story is as much about resilience as it is about loss. On that note, we’ll see you next time.
